Upcoming Lecture: “The Secret Language of Sacred Spaces”

The Arts Society Hamburg is presenting its November lecture, held by Jon Cannon, in St Thomas Becket Church as a fund-raising event in aid of the church.

From Chartres Cathedral to Angkor Wat, religion has been the inspiration for many of the
greatest buildings of the world. This lecture explores the architecture of the major religions
of humanity. It lays out the resulting developments in chronological order and shows how the
beliefs of each faith helped to shape its architecture and went on to be explored by designers
of genius.

Church Wanderers in Kiel

It is now time to sign up for the long-awaited August walk on Saturday 11 August!  This is an outing to the coastal area round Kiel, brilliantly organized by Lee Shaw and offering plenty of walking, pleasant breaks and even the possibility of a ferry ride on the Kieler Förde.
MEETING POINT:  Hamburg Hauptbahnhof in front of the Deutsche Bahn Reise Zentrum.
TIME:   9:10  to allow time to get economical group travel tickets
DEPART HAMBURG:  9:43 on the RE70
ARRIVE KIEL HAUPTBAHNHOF:  10:55  Here the Wanderers meet Lee and take a bus to Strande where the walk begins. In case of delays on the day,  Lee can be contacted on his mobile phone: 0157 84083232.
PLEASE BRING:  Food and drink for the journey to Kiel and something for lunch if you don’t want to buy refreshments on the walk.  Additional bus and ferry fares may come to an estimated 8 Euro.
RETURN HAMBURG: 2 trains leave Kiel for Hamburg every hour , but what time the group gets back to Kiel Station depends on the walking pace, the length of the breaks and the choice of alternative routes, but probably not before evening. There is so much to see and enjoy and up to three hours good walking, so it is definitely worth the time invested!
Please phone Nicki Schiller (04104 6999266 or 0176 30393063) if you would like more details of the walk, and let her know by Friday 3. August, if you plan to come, so that she and Lee can coordinate the arrangements (nicki.schiller at gmx.de).

Off to the Baltic

The next Church Wanderers walk will be along the Baltic Coast near Kiel on 11 August. The Wanderers meet about once a month to walk, chat and eat (sandwiches, cake, ice cream, you name it). If you’d like to be added to the list, please contact Nicki Schiller – nicki.schiller [at] gmx.de

Concordia Chamber Choir to sing at May Evensong

For our next Choral Evensong on 25th May we are excited to welcome the Concordia Chamber Choir from South London.

The choir was founded in January 1998, initially as an offshoot of the Dulwich Choral Society; the inaugural concert was given in Guys Hospital Chapel in November 1998 in aid of the Evelina Children’s Hospital Appeal.

Concordia is made up of approximately thirty singers from around the Dulwich area, and beyond. Initially conducted by Susan Farrow, and subsequently by Graham Ross, the choir is currently directed by Dan Ludford-Thomas, who began with the choir in 2010. Their repertoire includes anything from Thomas Tallis to Arvo Pärt and Eric Whitacre, via Cole Porter, Vaughan Williams and Britten. The choir has toured to Italy, France, the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark.
