Come and visit us for Nacht der Kirchen 2021 on 18 September

We are excited to participate in Hamburg’s “Nacht der Kirchen” again, which is going to take place on 18 September this year. We will be open from 5pm to 10pm.

Please find details below:

From 5pm: Open Church

Our church will be open for tours from 5pm to 10pm continuously. Just come and visit! Parishioners will be present and happy to answer your questions (in German or English). 

6pm – 6:30pm: Evening Prayer

Traditional Anglican Evening Prayer, led by Susanne Hergoss. 

9pm – 9:30pm: Compline

“Compline” derives its name from a Latin word meaning “completion” (completorium). It is primarily a service of silence and reflection before rest at the end of the day. Led by Revd Jules A. Barnes.

Banker, Bankrupt, Builder – Henry Canning Esquire

A short illustrated biography researched and written by Dr. Madeleine Resuehr is available now.

It is thanks to Henry Canning, British Consul General to Hamburg from 1823-1841 that we have the historic building in Zeughausmarkt, and can still worship there as STB church today. Henry succeeded in persuading the Hamburg Senate to give the British community a plot of land on which to build a new church and in encouraging British merchants, their Hamburg associates and the British Government to donate the funds necessary.

The new English Church was dedicated in 1838 and, as a mark of respect, Henry Canning was laid to rest there after his death in 1841.

This short booklet fills in the gaps about his childhood, tells of his business ventures, his marriage and family, and solves a mystery.

A Benefit Concert of Classical Music – 10 Sept 7:00pm – with Astrid Müller and Rudolf Kelber

Astrid Müller studied viola in Berlin, the USA and Israel and played with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonie Hamburg and others. She taught viola at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, 1996-2012.

Rudolf Kelber is the former church music director of St Jacobi, Hamburg (1982- 2015). He has given concerts all over Europe, most recently in Paris and took part in the inauguration concert which featured the new Elbphilharmonie organ.
