April 5, 2020 @ 10:30 am

UPDATE:

The service is now online here: https://anglican-church-hamburg.de/palm-sunday-virtual-service/
Also, Junior Church prepared something fun for the children as well: https://anglican-church-hamburg.de/junior-church-all-about-palm-sunday/

Dear All,

Unfortunately, we can’t meet together in the church. Instead, the service will be online at 10:30 Sunday morning (5 April, 2020). The link will be posted early that day on our website and on our Facebook page. And if you should for some reason miss that time slot, please know the link will get you to the service any time. Many people from St. Thomas’ have participated in preparing this liturgy. And if we’re all participating at the same time, the feeling of “Christian community” is very powerful, even though we are scattered.

I would like to suggest a way to make the Palm Sunday online liturgy more alive and “hands on,” especially if you have children. Involving children’s senses helps them to more easily understand, feel, and retain what is being taught. And guess what: sensory is also good for adults!

Here’s what to do! Before Sunday, get some palms. What? You can’t find any in Hamburg, Germany? Well, in that case, any greenery will do. Visit your garden or your window sill and pick anything that suits your fancy. No garden, or plants on the sill? No problem! DRAW a palm frond, or print one in color from the internet. During the service, I’ll explain all about this tradition used by the people in Jesus’ time. And we’ll hear about what it symbolizes for us today in modern Germany. And we’ll ask God to bless your “palm.”
